Hannah Kirk is a PhD student in Social Data Science at the University of Oxford. She graduated from Trinity College, University of Cambridge in 2018 with a double first in Economics (B.A), and from Yenching Academy, Peking University in 2020 (M.A) with honours. Hannah has lived in Beijing for two years where she researched and published work on understanding Chinese AI through Confucianism, and focused her thesis on the cultural and political influences shaping recommendation algorithms and content moderation on the Chinese internet.
Hannah’s current research centres on the application of machine learning techniques for the detection of computational propaganda, and the audit of AI systems for algorithmic fairness, accountability and transparency. Whilst living in Beijing for two years, Hannah focused on the governance of these emerging technologies through her work on data privacy legislation, intercultural digital ethics and China’s AI strategy
