Tackling Political Advertising
Over the past year, online political advertising has become a major topic of interest to scholars, journalists, and the public. Numerous stories have detailed how social media advertising tools can be used to target political advertising at a granular level, in ways which are often not transparent and difficult to audit.
Over the next few months, we’re going to be working with Who Targets Me, a project based in the United Kingdom, to study the methods behind and impact of social media advertising on political debate in the campaigns for the US midterms.
We will be working to identify patterns and trends in political advertising in the lead up to the November midterms. If you’re based in the US and wish to participate, please install the Who Targets Me Chrome or Firefox extension (and continue using Facebook as normal).
