    Samantha Shorey is a doctoral candidate in Communication at the University of Washington. She is a research associate at the Tactile and Tactical Design Lab in the department of Human Centered Design & Engineering (HCDE), studying the intersection of techno-culture and craft. Her dissertation is an ethnography of women designers, artists, and students who create technological artifacts within the “Maker Movement.”
    She earned a masters degree from the University of Massachusetts Amherst, where she wrote her thesis on young women and their use of Tumblr for personal and political expression online. Her scholarship on cultural industries is also informed by years of creative practice as a professional photographer, working in analog film.
    She has collaborated with the project on several writing projects about algorithms, automation, and politics.
